ARTIST'S BIO

Lexiong Ying, born in Shanghai and based in London, is an interdisciplinary artist working across various visual media. She holds a Master of Arts in Data Visualisation from the University of the Arts London and a bachelor's degree in Fashion Design with Marketing. Her work has been exhibited internationally in cities including London, Manchester, Düsseldorf, Paris, Barcelona, and New York and has been featured in a range of media platforms.

Lexiong’s practice explores contemporary existential dilemmas and cultural mythologies, delving into themes such as emotional flux,  technological saturation, and the fragility of human connection. Through a language of playful symbolism and subtle irony, she constructs visual narratives using diverse media, including 3D-printed sculpture, experimental photography and video, and mixed-media installations.

Beyond her artistic endeavours, Lexiong practices fortune-telling, blending spiritual wisdom with contemporary insights. This integration enriches her multidisciplinary approach and adds a deeper philosophical dimension to her work.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

My creative process is grounded in observation, emotional sensitivity, and psychological inquiry. I draw on lived experiences, intimate encounters, and reflective analysis to shape work that explores both personal and collective motivations.

My practice revolves around recurring themes, including emotional instability, internal conflict, spiritual resonance, non-normative lifestyles, and the evolving relationship between humans and their environments. Through metaphor, irony, and symbol-laden imagery, I seek to expose latent tensions embedded in the seemingly mundane.

Engaging with a range of media—including but not limited to 3D-printed forms, experimental photography, video, and mixed media—I choose materials and processes in direct response to the conceptual demands of each work. I aim to create work that resonates with the emotional and philosophical core of contemporary life, inviting viewers to engage with the work through their own
perspectives, thereby enriching the shared experience.

FUTURE PLANS

My ongoing artistic practice continues to explore the complex behavioural patterns and  psychological dynamics of contemporary individuals, with a sustained and deep-rooted interest in  their fluid emotional landscapes and spiritual experiences. For some time now, I have been  particularly engaged with the unique experiences and challenges faced by Asian women in the global  context—a subject I am committed to exploring with continued care and reflection. I remain  dedicated to capturing the nuanced yet vital emotional currents, lifestyles, and interactions between  people and their environments, alongside metaphysical and healing pathways.

This conceptual focus is expressed through a multidisciplinary approach, utilising a broad spectrum  of media including, but not limited to, 3D printed sculptures, experimental photography, video art,  and mixed-media installations.

A central pillar of my work is the continuation and expansion of my signature series, “How Do You  Verify That You Are You?”, which employs the Möbius Ring as a symbolic motif to explore themes of  contradiction, unity, and identity. Building on this foundation, I develop a cohesive body of works  probing the dialectics of self and other, permanence and flux, particularly within the globalised  digital era and intersecting cultural identities shaped by it.

Furthermore, I plan to pioneer the integration of augmented reality (AR) technology within my artistic  framework. This will facilitate immersive spiritual and visual experiences designed to address  contemporary anxieties and promote psychological healing. By merging cutting-edge digital media  with traditional sculptural and photographic techniques, I create innovative sensory environments  that engage diverse audiences and expand the boundaries of experiential art.

Rooted in the vibrant and open London art ecosystem, I am uniquely positioned to explore the  specific challenges Asian women face in the West and globally. This perspective enriches my work  with a critical engagement in gender, cultural identity, and diaspora experiences, emphasizing  resilience, empowerment, and the nuanced vulnerabilities of Asian women. The UK’s freedom for  artistic expression and its pluralistic environment are essential to my practice, providing a  supportive context that is far more enabling than the more restrictive creative spaces I have  encountered elsewhere.

Looking ahead, I aim to establish an international profile through participation in prominent  exhibitions, cross-disciplinary residencies, and strategic collaborations across Europe and beyond.  My ambition is to contribute meaningfully to contemporary dialogues around identity, technology,  spirituality, and cultural experience, positioning myself as a dynamic and evolving artist both within  the UK and on the global stage.

Plastic Human Relations

Year: 2021
Dimensions: 29.7cm x 42cm, four pieces
Medium: Experimental Photography
Framing: Framed in oak

Description:
While technology has undoubtedly streamlined many aspects of daily life, it has also profoundly transformed human behaviour. As one of the most significant innovations of the technological era, social media prompts a critical question: has it genuinely brought people closer together, or does it present a facade of connection, concealing underlying gaps or even fostering conflict? Like certain plastic products, social media may appear alluring and seamless, yet it is fragile and superficial.

The Hypocritical Us

Year: 2021

Dimensions: 47’& 29.7cm x 42cm
Medium: Short Video & Experimental Photography
Framing: Framed in oak

Description:

This piece reflects on the quiet complexities of insincerity and the masks we wear. We relentlessly partake in insincere social interactions driven by the pursuit of personal gain or achieving hidden objectives. Beneath the veneer of mutual praise, we subtly reinforce our social standing and project our perceived value, perpetuating a cycle of superficial affirmation.
